UN BALLO IN MASCHERA (A MASKED BALL) – Gala dinner and period dances in costume to open the Venice Carnival
Date: Saturday, 31 January
Hours: 8 p.m. – 12 a.m.
Location: Ridotto Hall, hotel Monaco & Grand Canal
Adress: San Marco 1332, Calle Vallaresso
Dress code: period costume
Taking inspiration from the opera by Giuseppe Verdi “Un Ballo in Maschera”, this first carnival event aims to recreate the atmosphere of the masked balls of the 1600s and 1700s. An evening of dancing in the name of elegance and fun in the magnificent hall of the Ridotto which in the 17th-18th century hosted the carnivals of Venice for 6 months a year. This event offers the opportunity to travel back in time, listen to baroque music, and above all have fun in company, learning the basic steps of period group dances under the guidance of the Dance Master.
The event includes a welcome aperitif and a four-course seated dinner paired with regional wines. The main courses are based on fish, but in case of preference for a vegetarian or meat menu the attendees can inform us at the time of booking. It will not be possible to change the type of menu during the event and any food allergy must be reported to the booking office.
This ball is the only one in program that brings together in the same place the atelier of costumes, Atelier Tiepolo, and the masquerade. Those who have purchased the silver or gold ticket will be able to do the fitting on the same day of the event, by appointment, in the rooms next to the Ridotto.
The entrance to the halls is set at 8 p.m. and it is mandatory to wear the period costume, which can be rented at the Atelier Tiepolo. On this occasion the atelier will be open inside the hotel Monaco.
A cloakroom service will be available and, in case of mobility difficulties, there is an elevator.

Dandolo Palace, Ridotto Main Hall
The palace of the noble Dandolo was the first place to accomodate the "Ridotto", public gaming rooms from 1638 till 1774. It used to be open during Carnival, which lasted several months, and during that time Giacomo Casanova considered the Ridotto as the stage setting and backdrop for his conquests.
